Complete Protein
A complete protein is a source that contains all nine essential amino acids in meaningful quantities. Whey, casein, egg, soy, beef and most other animal proteins are complete. Single-source plant proteins like pea, rice or hemp are usually low in one or two essentials and need to be blended.
Why It Matters
Building muscle requires all nine essential amino acids to be present in the same meal. If even one is missing or low, muscle protein synthesis is throttled. That is why complete proteins are the foundation of any serious protein supplement and why plant blends (pea plus rice, soy plus oat) are designed to fill each others' gaps.
How to Spot It on a Label
Whey, casein, egg, fish, beef, milk and soy products are complete by default. Plant proteins should call out 'complete amino acid profile' or list at least two complementary sources. If a plant product is single-source pea, single-source rice, or single-source hemp, it is not nutritionally complete on its own.
