Ion-Exchange

Ion-exchange is a high-purity whey filtration method that uses electrical charge to separate protein from fat, lactose, and minerals. The result is one of the purest whey isolates available, often above 90% protein by weight.

Why It Matters

Ion-exchange whey isolate strips away nearly all fat and lactose, making it a strong choice for people sensitive to dairy sugar or chasing the highest possible protein density per gram. The trade-off is that the process can denature some of the smaller bioactive peptides (immunoglobulins, lactoferrin) that survive gentler methods like cross-flow microfiltration.

Most premium isolate products today combine techniques, listing ion-exchange or cross-flow microfiltration on the label depending on the brand's preference for purity versus preserved peptides.

How to Spot It on a Label

Look for the phrases ion-exchange whey isolate or ion exchange WPI on the label. Some brands hide the method and just say whey protein isolate, which is fine but does not tell you which filtration path was used. Higher protein-per-gram (usually 25g protein in a 27g scoop) is a strong indicator of ion-exchange.
