Micellar Casein

Micellar casein is the form of casein where the original spherical micelle structure of the protein is preserved through gentle filtration. This is the slowest-releasing protein you can buy and the standard pick for before-bed shakes.

Why It Matters

Micellar casein takes 6 to 8 hours to fully digest because it physically gels in the stomach. That slow trickle of amino acids is what keeps muscle protein synthesis elevated through the overnight fast, blunts overnight breakdown, and produces small but measurable extra gains in resistance-training studies.

How to Spot It on a Label

The label specifically reads 'micellar casein' (not 'calcium caseinate' or 'sodium caseinate'). The shake will be noticeably thicker than whey and is often blended with milk or yogurt rather than water. Common dose is 24 to 30g per scoop.
