Pre-Workout Protein

Pre-workout protein is a 20 to 30g serving of fast-digesting protein (typically whey or whey isolate) consumed 30 to 60 minutes before training. It primes muscle protein synthesis during the workout and may slightly reduce post-workout soreness compared to fasted training.

Why It Matters

Pre-workout protein matters most if your training session is longer than 60 minutes or if you have not eaten a protein-rich meal in the previous 3 to 4 hours. For shorter sessions after a normal-protein meal, the marginal benefit of an additional pre-workout shake is small.

How to Spot It on a Label

Any quality whey, whey isolate or pea-rice blend works as a pre-workout protein. The keyword is 'fast-digesting.' Casein and slow-release blends are not the right pick before training because they take 6 to 8 hours to fully release amino acids.
