Methionine

Methionine is a sulfur-containing essential amino acid that initiates the synthesis of every protein in your body. It also feeds the methylation cycle, which regulates gene expression, neurotransmitter production, and detoxification.

Why It Matters

Methionine is the very first amino acid added when a ribosome starts building a new protein, which makes it foundational to all tissue growth. It is also the entry point for the body's methylation pathways through SAMe, supporting everything from creatine production to liver detox to mood regulation.

Methionine is the limiting amino acid in most legume-based diets, which is why beans alone do not make a complete protein for muscle building. Animal proteins, whey, and quinoa are naturally rich in methionine.

How to Spot It on a Label

Methionine appears on full amino acid panels as L-methionine. Whey concentrate delivers around 0.6g per 25g protein scoop, isolate slightly more. Plant-only powders without pea or hemp can come in low; check the panel before relying on a single-source product.
