Threonine

Threonine is an essential amino acid concentrated in the central nervous system, connective tissue, and the gut lining. It is a major building block of mucin, the protective layer that coats your intestinal wall.

Why It Matters

Threonine is unusual because a large fraction of dietary threonine is consumed by the gut itself to maintain the mucin barrier. That makes it quietly important for digestive health, immune function, and recovery from any GI stress.

Threonine also contributes to collagen and elastin formation, so a sustained shortfall can show up as slower recovery from tendon strain. Any complete protein source covers threonine comfortably; isolated supplementation is rarely needed.

How to Spot It on a Label

Threonine is listed on the full amino panel of most quality protein powders. Expect around 1.6 to 1.8g threonine per 25g whey protein serving. Pea protein is also a solid threonine source; rice protein is lower.
