Histidine is an essential amino acid that serves as the precursor to histamine and forms the backbone of carnosine, a powerful muscle buffer that delays fatigue during high-intensity exercise.

Why It Matters

Histidine matters for lifters because the body combines it with beta-alanine to form carnosine in muscle tissue. Carnosine buffers hydrogen ions during sets in the 30 second to 2 minute range, which is why beta-alanine supplements rely on adequate histidine to actually do their job.

Histidine also contributes to red blood cell production through histamine signaling and supports the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers. Vegan diets can run lower in histidine than animal-based diets, which is one reason to choose a complete blend rather than a single-source plant powder.

How to Spot It on a Label

Histidine appears on full amino panels. Whey concentrate delivers around 0.45g per 25g serving. Beta-alanine (the more famous performance ingredient) is the rate-limiting partner; ample whey already covers your histidine side of the equation.
