Cost Per Gram of Protein

Cost per gram of protein is the single most important value metric: how many dollars (or cents) you pay for each gram of actual protein. Calculated as: price divided by (servings per tub times protein per serving). In 2026 the floor for cheap whey is about $0.0174 per gram.

Why It Matters

Cost-per-gram is the honest answer to 'how cheap is this protein.' It cancels out scoop size, tub size and marketing claims, leaving only the real number that matters: dollars per gram of usable protein. ProteinPrice uses this metric as the foundation of every Value Score.

How to Spot It on a Label

If a tub is not on a Value Score table, you can calculate cost-per-gram yourself: (Price) divided by (Servings per Container x Protein per Serving). A 5lb tub at $33 with 60 servings of 25g protein equals $33 / 1500g = $0.022 per gram. Under $0.025 per gram is excellent.
