Ready-To-Drink (RTD)

Ready-to-drink (RTD) protein is a pre-mixed, shelf-stable protein shake sold in a bottle or carton, typically containing 20 to 30 grams of protein per serving. RTDs trade some cost efficiency for convenience: you pay roughly 2 to 3 times more per gram of protein than mixing your own powder.

Why It Matters

RTDs are the right protein for travel days, work meetings, post-workout when you do not have access to a blender, and for people who simply will not commit to mixing a shake. The premium category (Fairlife Core Power Elite, OWYN Pro Elite) hits 30 to 40g protein per bottle. The mass-market category (Premier Protein, Atkins) hits 20 to 30g.

How to Spot It on a Label

RTD bottles list protein per serving directly on the front. Check the calories: many mass-market RTDs are protein-forward but also include 8 to 10g of sugar. The premium tier uses milk-protein isolate and zero-sugar formulas. Refrigeration is required for some brands (Core Power) and optional for others (Premier).
